Internet Security is all about educating yourself about online dangers. Education is the solution to computer security and protecting children online. Parents need to educate themselves about internet security, cyberbullying, and social networking dangers.
Social networking is growing at rapid rates with children of all ages and online predators and cyberbullies are using these sites more and more. Parents should understand the guidelines for contacting minors and if you don’t believe the rules are strong enough don’t let your child join the site. There are some basic ground rules for social networking sites including MySpace, Facebook, etc for child safety. First, don’t let your child to use their full name advice your child to only use first name and last initial. Second, don’t allow your child to post your home address, home phone number, or cell phone number.
Third, make a time frame for when you child can be online. Fourth, all pictures should be review before being posted online.
Parents should know how to work the social networking sites which includes making comments on pages, the wall, email, and posting pictures. Parents should create an account on the social networking site to join their children. You can advice your child’s they can’t have an account unless they make you a friend so that you can observe your child’s wall, evaluate your child’s friend list and assess the pictures getting posted online. This simple act will help you prevent online predators from contacting your child.
Cyberbullies bring into play a variety of technology to make threats, hassle, or make the internet uncomfortable for kids. Victims are frequently teens and the cyberbully generally goes the same school as your child.
Cyberbullies send e-mails, IM or messages to the victim’s cell or computer. This is becoming even more popular on social networking sites. Parents need to talk to their children to see if this is happening to them.
